Suffering from Acne? This Probiotic Product Might Be Just What Your Beauty Routine Needs

You’ve probably heard about the benefits of probiotic foods for gut health. Some nutritionists rave about how helpful bacteria in foods such as yogurt, kombucha, and sauerkraut can improve things like sleep, digestion, and the immune system. But have you ever considered what benefits probiotics might have when added to skincare products? It turns out that there is promising research that suggests probiotics might help in the treatment of acne and skin health.

To take advantage of the benefits of probiotics for skincare, Mother Dirt has developed a patented probiotic skincare product that helps combat harmful bacteria. We chatted with Ashley Troutman, Senior Director of Brand Management for Mother Dirt, to learn more about probiotics and why you should consider adding them to your skincare routine.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are any microorganism—typically bacteria—introduced to the body for beneficial purposes. There’s a tendency to think of bacteria as a bad thing, but your body actually contains billions of friendly bacteria which help it function. Scientists and doctors have been studying the gut microbiome and the impact ingested probiotics can have on your health. But only recently have we started studying the microorganisms on the skin.

What benefits do they have for the skin when used topically?

Acne results when your pores become clogged with a mixture of sebum (from your skin) and dead skin cells. When this happens, some of the bacteria normally found on the skin (C. acnes) thrive. They feed on sebum, turning it into fatty acids. So when they see a clogged pore, they call all their friends in and throw a house party. More C. acnes means more sebum is converted into fatty acids, which can irritate the skin and cause inflammation. Probiotics work by keeping your microbiome balanced, just like in your gut, which could have a positive impact on acne.

Promising research points to the fact that probiotics could be successful in the treatment of acne. Probiotics might actually modify a few factors in pathophysiology of acne development and might improve the condition.

What makes the AO Restorative Mist unique from other skincare products on the market and what are its benefits?

Mother Dirt AO+ Restorative Mist ($69) is a probiotic spray which allows you to mist your face and body with a live & active culture as part of your skincare routine. Mother Dirt touts a pretty extensive probiotic formula within this mist. They are the only probiotic which has a live patented bacteria to combat harmful bacteria on the skin.

This product has a very simple ingredient list and has four biome-friendly ingredients, which will restore balance to skin within four weeks.

As we mentioned above, the research is quite promising as to the beneficial effect of probiotics for acne treatment. But even aside from the probiotics, the hydration benefits of this product alone are enough to make it worthwhile. The AO+ Restorative Mist results in smooth, comfortable skin health.

Application is easy. Simply mist onto your face and body with 3 or 4 good pumps and rub gently or allow it to absorb on its own. Put special emphasis on your T-zone (nose and cheeks), as this is where acne tends to develop most.

The AO+ Restorative Mist is part of The Difference: Active Probiotic System Acne Treatment Kit ($99). The kit features a Probiotic Foaming Cleanser ($24), Acne Treatment Lotion with salicylic acid ($48), and AO+ Restorative Mist ($69). The three products work together to treat acne with FDA-approved salicylic acid and then restore your skin microbiome with probiotics, which is a more holistic approach to solving skin issues.
