Mexico Spa Guide: The Best Spas in Riviera Maya

When Cancun was earmarked for tourism in the late 1960s, the Mexican Caribbean was decorated by miles of unspoiled white sand beaches and ancient Mayan ruins waiting for its big tourist break. By the 1980s it was a hot destination, and by the 1990s, there wasn’t much room left for new hotel development. The only direction to go was south. And south it went.

Mexico Spa Guide: The Best Spas in Tulum

The 80-mile corridor now known as Riviera Maya officially begins at Puerto Morelos and ends at Puerto Allen. The towns of Playa del Carmen on the north and Tulum to the south serve as the main commercial and nightlife centers. The former is famous for its non-stop bars, high-end retail, international restaurants, and live music venues. Tulum, on the other hand, is the global epicenter of all-night jungle raves, yoga retreats, a legendary EDM scene, and all-round boho vibes.

Mexico Spa Guide: The Best Spas in Los Cabos

Both are home to velvety soft beaches, turquoise waters, jungle excursions, per-historic cenotes, and underwater caves. Riviera Maya is where you can explore the ancient Mayan cities of Tulum and Coba. The area is equally appealing to outdoor enthusiasts, beach bums, and bar hoppers.

Then, while the nopal paddles are heating, the spa therapist gently exfoliates the body with a sunflower cactus scrub.

Spa Profile: SE Spa at Grand Velas Los Cabos

After a rinse in the in-room shower, the therapist massages the guest with the warm malleable nopal pads and a light rosemary oil. The cactus releases a vitamin A, D, E, and K-rich liquid that covers and then soaks into the skin. Post-treatment, guests are given a detox shot of spinach, cactus, cucumber, pineapple, and lime served with a fruit skewer.

Sense, A Rosewood Spa at Rosewood Mayakoba

The lush jungle is your haven as you lounge in the Kuxtal Garden. Here you will find peace and balance as you connect to nature to a higher state of consciousness. Guided by a shaman and traditional indigenous practices, enter the Temezcal to purify not only your body, but the limitations of your mind and spirit that have held you back.

Dedicated to the power of ancient wisdom, Sense offers a full range of body and facial care, plus a curated menu of treatments that pay homage to the revered medicine rituals of the Maya. If this is your first time, we recommend the 90-minute Itzam Herbal Cure. Herbal medicine was long revered by the Mayans as a way to heal and protect the body. This treatment begins with a traditional energy cleanse incorporating copal incense, an experience that returns to the roots of pre-Hispanic medicine.

The healing properties of plants grown in the Sensory Garden are used to recreate a healing herbal clay recipe. The body is wrapped in a kind of cocoon made from a local plant textile to increase and strengthen the natural and nourishing properties of the clay. An herbal balm is applied to the localized areas to complete this experience that will connect you to the healing properties of Mother Earth.
