If you are planning a trip to Tokyo, it’s a good idea to book your spa experiences ahead of time as many destinations require reservations and some book up far in advance. Japan Spa Guide: The Best Spas in Kyoto

Insider’s Tips to Know Before You Go:

  • If you have tattoos, check with the spa directly to make sure it is a tattoo-friendly destination. Some spas in Japan do not allow guests with tattoos to use their facilities.

  • Many spas with onsen bathing areas do not allow bathing suits. If you prefer privacy, some destinations have private onsen bathing areas that can be reserved for an additional fee.

  • It is customary to take your shoes off before entering the spa/onsen. It is also the custom to shower and wash your hair before using the onsen bath. This helps keep the destination clean and hygienic.
