Prior to launching Satya+Sage, Son-ja Haile started out journaling ideas of a store that she envisioned. A mom and yogi with an MBA, she also worked as a disaster manager where she witnessed various walks of life, from seeing the results of a flood-ravaged city to seeing shelters filled with people who had no place to go. As a result, her life's experience and inadvertently developing coping mechanisms of daily self-care ultimately brought her to create Satya+Sage—a line of self-care inspired candles that are handmade and eco-friendly.

Satya+Sage candles feature essential oil blends are are formulated to remind you to slow down, uplift yourself, and create your own sacred space. Each candle is hand-poured with fragrances blended in small batches, and the candles are smudged with sage before pouring, then smudged again with palo santo after they’ve cured. They are available in an array of scents with names including Goddess (rose + blood orange + vanilla), Healer (sandalwood + vanilla + bergamot), among others.

We care about the impact we have on our planet and started an initiative called Sage the Planet,” says Haile. “Our goal is to continually seek ways to be sustainable and share those opportunities with our customers. When a customer purchases Satya + Sage, we offer the opportunity to plant a tree. Our packaging is 100% recyclable and/or reusable and made from FSC certified material. We have also started a beta phase to allow our customers the opportunity to reuse their candle jars through our candle refill program. Our products are also Leaping Bunny certified, so we have committed not to use animal-derived products.”

We chatted with Haile, who shared the inspiration behind her line of self-care products, her favorite candle recommendations for various occasions, and more.

When was Satya+Sage founded?

Satya+Sage was founded in 2018. The meaning behind the name is symbolic of when I was going through a lot of self-discovery. While taking yoga teacher training, I learned about the yoga Yamas and Niyamas. Satya is one of the yamas, and it means truth or truthfulness. Sage is an ancient practice used by indigenous people to ward off negativity. So, Satya is Truth and Sage gets rid of negativity to bring in the good vibes. Truth + Good Vibes.

What’s the meaning behind the name?

Satya + Sage is part of my self-care journey, and I decided to share it with the world. Through important stages of my life, I realized it was when I was consistent in taking moments of stillness, was when I felt most connected to myself and felt clear in the path I was on. Candles and aromas have always played a big role in those moments. Each Satya + Sage candle or product is made to bring inspiration to whatever brings someone back to themselves and their desires.

Tell us more about your products and what makes them special.

At Satya + Sage, we care about how our products influence our customers, our environment, and believe luxury should be accessible. Our candles are made in the USA, non-toxic, made with 100% plant-based wax, and are hand-poured in recyclable and reusable jars. As part of my process, I clear the room using palo santo, lavender, rosemary or whatever is growing in my mini garden—both before and after each product is made.

Our core intention is to allow people a moment of peaceful connection and self-reflection. In a world where ‘doing' is more valued than ‘being,’ we aspire to bring a sense of well-being to our customers by sharing the joy of rest and ritual, and supporting sacred moments and spaces in a busy and overwhelming world. We hope to bring healing through the moments lived with the light of our candles. We believe that our motto, “Truth and good vibes” is embedded in each candle we lovingly hand pour, using sustainable and recyclable packaging and materials.

Do you have a hero product? What’s your favorite?

Each candle plays a special role, depending on what you like. There are times I burn each candle more or less. When working from home, I love to burn Sun because of its fresh lemony uplifting aroma. For a mid-day pick-me-up, I love to burn Goddess for a fresh aroma of blood orange and roses. For a spa day, Blessed is sure to bring relaxation; for date night, Healer and King are must-haves; and if you've had a really rough day and want to have a late-night yoga session, our Meditation candle is perfect to light while you release the day's stress!

Each candle is hand-poured with fragrances blended in small batches and smudged with sage before pouring, then smudged once again with Palo Santo after they’ve cured to capture the ultimate good vibes.
