We chatted with Jarnot, who shared her secrets to success, beauty secrets, wellness tips, and more:

When did Beauty Heroes launch?

Almost five years ago, Beauty Heroes as a subscription service and online store launched in September 2014. Time goes by so fast. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come—especially with us preparing to open our first brick and mortar store this summer in Northern California.

What’s the meaning behind the name?

I love this question and am always so excited to have the opportunity to give the backstory behind “Beauty Heroes.” When I was a spa director, against what any sales director would probably advise, I used to encourage our clients to not over-purchase products. Rather than pushing them to purchase a whole regimen of four or five products, I knew that if they would find one, maybe two things that really worked for them in our spa, they would come back. It was more important to me to establish a level of trust and expertise with our clientele than it was for me to make a sell.

I would talk to clients about my “hero” products—the products I believed in that really delivered on their promise. When seeking the name of my business, I chose “Beauty Heroes” by the beauty industry definition of hero product with my experience of referencing a “hero product” when speaking with clients. Beauty Heroes also has an alternate meaning: beauty products that are truly clean and safe for our community—environmental heroes.

What inspired the creation of Beauty Heroes?

Honestly, it was a simple idea. The purpose of Beauty Heroes was to slow down the process of how consumers discover new, full-sized beauty products in a luxurious way. I wanted to provide a service that allowed consumers to experience new brands, one hero product at a time, while also assisting beauty consumers to understand a product’s ingredients, formulations, environmental impact, and how the product can be integrated into their existing routines. We know that brand loyalty comes from a place of trust. Once you understand a product, you are more likely to use it consistently, benefit from it, and if it works for you, repurchase it.

Tell us more about Beauty Heroes and what makes it special.

Something I’m extremely proud of with Beauty Heroes is our ingredient standard that bans any ingredients that could potentially be harmful to our bodies. We are proud to hold the most stringent ingredient standard in the beauty space that includes omitting ingredients that are ethoxylated and potentially lined with 1,4 Dioxane (a carcinogen), as well as all non-biodegradable ingredients like silicones, acrylates, PEGs and more. I’m passionate about highlighting brands that are doing great things for our well-being as well as the environment through our initiative, Project Blue Beauty.

Who inspires you?

I’m inspired by a lot of the beauty brand founders that I work with at Beauty Heroes. They make really beautiful products the hard, slow, and expensive way, and I appreciate their dedication to creating products that are good for us and good for the earth. Maya Angelou is one of my biggest inspirations—her book Mom & Me & Mom changed my life.

Oprah, of course, has an indelible layer of inspiration on my entire being. I’m also inspired by people who are so authentically themselves: Danielle LaPorte, Lizzo, and Chelsea Handler are a few who come to mind. Additionally, I’m inspired by great athletes. I love watching the discipline, focus, and mastery they possess—it’s fascinating.

Secrets to success?

I don’t think I know the secret to success, but I’m confident saying that hard work, a lot of patience, focusing, never losing sight of your goals, and the ability to believe in yourself are key factors. I also think it’s extremely beneficial to surround yourself with people who share your values and who support you—having a strong tribe around you is so important.

Beauty secrets?

My biggest beauty tip is to minimize or eliminate products that contain ingredients that are harmful to your health. There are so many reasons why, but beautiful skin is a reflection of our health, and if we are using products that ultimately may cause health problems, it will reflect in our skin, hair, nails–everywhere. Wear a physical block mineral SPF on your face, neck, and chest consistently. And embrace the face mask—masking two to three times a week makes all the difference.

Wellness tips?

For me, it’s reading before going to bed. It helps me sleep better at night, and we are nothing if we aren’t allowing ourselves the opportunity to truly rest. I also try to sweat as often and as hard as I can. Lastly, meditate—even if you don’t think you’re good at it. You’d be surprised at how restorative silence can be.

Favorite way to relax?

I love to listen to live music, that’s probably my favorite way to relax. A good show or concert, good food, good vibes, and dancing—I don’t think there’s anything more relaxing.
