In the summer of 1976, Carole Bamford was in the garden with her young daughter Alice when she noticed that her roses were wilting. The culprit was Roundup, an herbicide being sprayed by a next-door farmer. Bamford didn't like what she learned about Roundup and its toxins. Shortly after the roses incident, Bamford visited an agricultural show where an organic farmer talked to her all about sustainable, natural farming.

This was a turning point for Bamford, who realized that while organic farming might not be the easy choice, it is the right choice for our health and the well-being of the planet. Though she initially was met with resistance, Bamford was determined to feed her family in a better way and make a difference in the world.

Fast-forward to today and Bamford’s Daylesford Farm is one of the most successful sustainable farms in the United Kingdom. The risks Bamford took to pursue responsible and organic farming methods have blossomed into a rewarding and meaningful career. In the last few years alone, Daylesford Organic has won over 100 national and international awards. The Bamford farming empire has expanded to include a brand of sustainable food, four farm shops, a Cookery School, the Daylesford Cottages, The Wild Rabbit pub, the Haybarn Spa, and the Bamford line of clothing and personal care products.

To celebrate the launch of Nurture, The Spa Insider joined Bamford for a brunch at her daughter’s One Gun Ranch in Malibu, California (The property's name comes from its previous owner Matt Sorum, former drummer for Guns N' Roses). It was an unusually overcast day in Los Angeles, but as guests drove up the mountain to One Gun Ranch, the clouds suddenly began to clear as if on cue to reveal the stunning Malibu ranch.

Bamford mentions in her book how she creates a special scene that guests will enjoy with her table settings, and this brunch was no exception. The table setting was gorgeous and so were the surroundings.

The biodynamic ranch looked like something out of a fairytale, complete with horses, cows, goats, dogs, and a pig named Romeo.

And the food? Healthy, delicious, and almost too pretty to eat. We tasted dishes prepared using recipes from Nurture with fresh ingredients grown on One Gun Ranch.

It was a memorable and inspiring morning. I can’t wait to try out more recipes from the book and maybe even try a little planting of my own.
