Tribe to Table Offers Healthy Food for Dogs and More from Native American Tribes
Wellness is an integral part of today’s lifestyle, with a greater sense of awareness in regards to what we put in and on our bodies. As a result, more companies and consumers are making changes, from safer best practices to incorporating clean, organic ingredients into their products. This shift has also begun to influence the way that people care for their pets, and many are starting to change the foods and treats that they feed them.
Located in Montrose, California, Tribe to Table is a unique store that offers everything from CBD and beauty products to healthy pet food and snacks, as well as handmade and harvested items from Native American tribes. As a bonus for pet owners/lovers, it hosts puppy parties in its beautifully designed space, which includes complimentary treats, puppy activities, and pet supervision. Add-on services include doggie bags, custom celebration cakes, as well as human treats and refreshments.
“Tribe to Table is a Native American market and brand working with over 60 tribes throughout the Americas, striving to engender indigenous enterprise large and small,” says Lorry Amieva, Vice-President of Tribe to Table. “From Mayan villages in the Yucatán Peninsula and Guatemala to native families in Canada—we are more than products, we are a community.”
During a recent visit to the store we got the chance to chat with Amieva, who shared more information about the company, its unique philosophy, and more:
When did Tribe to Table open?
Tribe to Table opened its doors on Black Friday in 2018 for the soft opening. The Grand Opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony were on March 1, 2019!
What does Tribe to Table mean?
Tribe to Table is like "farm to table" except from tribes! The majority of tribal foods are either wild foods or cultivated heirloom seeds that are seldom found outside of the tribal communities they originate from.
What inspired the creation of Tribe to Table?
It all started with seafood. Fishing is a way of life and a deep-rooted part of the culture for many Pacific Northwest tribes, where fishermen still feed their families and make a living the way they have for generations. Through the seafood trade as well as being native himself, Tribe to Table’s founder became well-acquainted with the superior quality of the wild foods he was coming in contact with, as well as the level of environmental stewardship that was involved when working with tribes.
Then it grew: wild berry jams, wild rice harvested by canoe, an artisanal line of hemp CBD, dog and cat foods, heirloom beans, fair trade coffees, teas, chocolates, honeys, jewelry—and continues to grow. Bringing the tribes to your table means bringing together cultures, traditions, art, and nature in a way that supports sustainability, health, consciousness, and awareness.
Can you tell us about your wellness philosophy for humans and pets?
As far as wellness for people and pets, we take a "plants over pills" approach. Native people throughout time have a reputation for their keen use of herbs and plant medicine, hence the Native CBD line!
What products do you offer?
We sell a wide variety of products, including but not limited to our own line of CBD, coffees (USDA Organic and Fair Trade from high mountain Guatemalan tribes and roasted on the Shinnecock Reservation in NY), honeys, and pet food/treats (majority of which is made from wild salmon from Pacific Northwest Tribes like the Nisqually), as well as wild berry jams and syrups (Ojibwe), maple syrup, wild fish and seafood (from many different tribes).
We also carry Mayan woven bags, belts, table runners, wall hangings and tapestries, beaded jewelry (both Mayan and Lakota), chocolates (Chickasaw), olive oils, and balsamic vinegars (Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation of California), blue corn and assorted corn meals, wild heirloom beans and grains, sustainable soaps, and beauty products. We are constantly adding new products, and as many of our items are seasonal, many of them are gone until the next harvest.
Tell us more about your CBD line.
Our CBD line is a proprietary, artisan line of Native American CBD products. Everything is THC free—no getting high or failing drug tests. We ship to all 50 states and are available in retailers nationwide. Currently, our assortment includes three different tinctures: 1000 mg, 500 mg, and 250 mg for dogs and cats! Dogs and cats get practically the same benefits from CBD as humans do, they just don't need as large of a does since they're typically smaller than humans.
The basic rule of thumb for dosing is 1 mg per 10 pounds; a 10-pound dog needs 1 mg, a 60-pound dog needs 6 mg, etc. We also have a CBD Relief Cream that has been very popular and effective for treating everything from backaches and knee injuries to headaches and menstrual cramps.
Where are your products available?
We have the majority of our items available online at www.tribetotable.com. The seafood items and one-off jewelry items aren't on there, though we are currently constructing those sections of the website. Coming soon!
